ANTONIO SAURA
Paintings and drawings

« Painting what exists behind objects. Painting the space where lost thoughts sleep. Painting the birth of unknowable glances. Painting the great silence... painting the pain ». A.S.

We are delighted to present, with the kind support of the Antonio Saura Foundation Archives, a collection of works by Antonio Saura (1930-1998). In 1947, Saura was 17 when he began painting and writing. After an “experimental period” of research that led him to Surrealism, and after a foray into Abstract Expressionism, in 1956 he found the definitive form of expression that would carry him into the pantheon of twentieth-century painting. From then on, he would represent exclusively the transfigured image of the human figure - women's bodies, faces, portraits, self-portraits, crowds - while taking us beyond Figuration. He will invite us to discover what lies behind the forms, and to perceive the feelings that drive him in light of life's vicissitudes. More than figures, more than bodies, Antonio Saura reveals the “inapparent”.
