Alberto MAGNELLI
Travel to Carrara

Starting with a still life from 1913, which prefigures the abstract canvases of 1914-15, the journey continues at the dawn of the 20s with a return to figuration, which Magnelli explained by the need, after the chaos of the war, to immerse himself in his beloved Tuscan countryside and make drawings on the motif.

Then, in the summer of 1931, came the astonishing Pierres drawings, some of which were to become the source of the paintings he produced in Paris after moving there in 1932. Then came the collages of the '40s, foreshadowing Magnelli's return to abstract painting.

Although the focus is on the trip to Carrara and Magnelli's discovery of the images imprisoned in the marble blocks, which he set out to reveal day after day, the exhibition allows us to discover the metamorphoses of Alberto Magnelli's painting.
