女 FEMMES CHINOISES
The 女 Chinese Women exhibition retraces the journey of women in China, from their representation in ceramics, painting or photography, to the symbolic motifs associated with them in the decorative arts, via the accessories and clothing that distinguish them.
Marriage, marital bliss and the desire for male offspring have given rise to an abundant iconographic repertoire, which the exhibition will explore through the presentation of a carved wooden wedding bed, textiles and narrative scenes painted on porcelain. The question of the feminine in spirituality, from the female divinities present in Taoist and Buddhist pantheons to popular rites linked to childbirth, is addressed through media as diverse as bronze sculpture, engraving, porcelain and stamping.
The final section of the exhibition presents women as artists through a selection of paintings from the Ming period (1368-1644) to the present day, and the presentation of an exceptional work by artist Peng Wei (b. 1974).
The exhibition is punctuated by poems by Chinese women who, over the centuries, comment on their condition, sharing their dreams and desires.
