Espace Muraille

Contemporary Art

Nestled in the old fortifications at the foot of Geneva’s old town, Espace Muraille’s driving desire is to be a lively and open venue that enhances the works within as well as the walls that surround them. Temporary exhibitions, personal artist projects and works from a rich permanent collection spread out over two floors and 275 square metres.

Caroline and Eric Freymond, a couple of passionate collectors, are the creators of Espace Muraille. Their project is ensconced in the foundations of an 18th century hôtel particulier. A place charged with history, rethought and remodelled by the Genevan architectural firm MVT so as to be given over to contemporary art. A transformation rather than a metamorphosis, aiming to preserve the magic of the old walls, which had long served as a cellar and were sleeping, overlooked, under layers of dust. Its presiding idea is a desire “to be open to and in dialogue with the art of our times”, according to Caroline Freymond, the creator and artistic director of Espace Muraille. Its aim is to “showcase contemporary artists and artisans as well as private collections, to foster connections and dialogue between works that have something in common or that are, on the contrary, diametrically opposed”. Espace Muraille’s vocation is to be a living, lively and intellectually stimulating venue, inhabited by the passion of those who invest in it. It also hosts concerts and conferences, debates, artists’ meetings and other cultural activities.

From the beginning, Espace Muraille has presented an international and ambitious programme. The venue was inaugurated by François Morrelet and Tadashi Kawamata, followed by Pierre Skira and Yohei Nishimura, then Monique Frydman, Thomas Saraceno, Arotin & Sergei, Sheila Hicks, Shirazeh Houshiary, Philippe Lardy, Edmund de Waal and finally, Olafur Eliasson in January 2018. As well as these exceptional exhibitions, the venue also hosts smaller-scale exhibitions and events such as those by Merete Larsen, Guo Pei, Dominique Renaud and Milia Maroun.
