The Patrick Gutknecht Gallery proposes an installation that brings together paintings, photographs, objects and furniture from the 1930s to 2022.
This installation, entitled "L'appartement d'une collectionneuse, Madame X - 1924 - 2022" (The apartment of a collector, Madame X - 1924 - 2022), is an attempt to reconstruct the apartment of Madame X., a collector who was passionate about works of the past as well as those of the present and who had an open eye for all the arts.
As we wander from one room to another, we notice that a dialogue is established between the paintings and photographs collected by Madame X throughout her life, and her furniture and objects chosen one by one and which are now for sale.
Whether it was a major work of art or a small charming object, Madame X always bought with her heart, without worrying about fashion.
Will this installation give us a better understanding of the so-called "collector's mind" that some of us possess and how our collections and the works we choose to surround ourselves with shape our lives?
Did Madame X really exist?
With this installation, the Patrick Gutknecht Gallery invites us into the heart of the struggle between truth and illusion and holds up a mirror to ourselves, to our lives, and to our place in the world.
