Brueghel: a family affair

Whether it is spelled Bruegel, Brueghel or Breughel, this name inevitably evokes the great Flemish painters of the 16th and 17th centuries. However, few of us know that the Brueghel dynasty extended far beyond those who bore this illustrious name.

What is the connection between Pieter Coecke d'Alost, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Brueghel III, Jan Brueghel the Younger, David Teniers the Younger and Jan van Kessel the Elder? Besides the fact that these artists were among the most influential Flemish painters of their generations, they all came from the same family, either by direct descent or through marriage. As a result, no less than five generations of artists succeeded one another in this influential family, where artistic filiation seems to have been the order of the day, thus constituting a true dynasty of painters.

Through a selection of 12 paintings specially brought together for the occasion, Gallery De Jonckheere is pleased to present an original pictorial journey highlighting the artistic heritage as well as the various, sometimes poorly known, family ties that linked these famous figures of early Flemish painting.
