BOROBUDUR
Jewel of Buddhist Art

This exhibition presents around fifty large-scale photographs of the sculpted narrative panels which decorate the galleries of the famous Buddhist monument of Borobudur, built on the island of Java in the 8th to 9th century.

Taken at night under the full moon, these works by the Belgian photographer Hughes Dubois give remarkable volume and presence to the engravings. They are accompanied in the exhibition by stone and bronze sculptures, as well as 19th-century books, paintings, and watercolours on loan from the Rijksmuseum and Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Linden-Museum in Stuttgart, as well as the Bibliothèque de Genève.
